“Gumball Alley,” is a definite must see while strolling downtown. Gumball Alley is a long walkway between two walls covered with thousands of wads of gum. Some leave their gum artistically displayed, some leave messages and others just stick. The chewing and sticking all began in 1960. While walking through, please feel free to add to the display.

The City of San Luis Obispo holds a lot of history, including the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which was founded in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra. The Mission continues to serve the community with daily Masses, tours, a Museum and a Gift Shop.

If you enjoy a little more exercise in your daily routine, there are many hiking and biking trails, including Bishop Peak, which is a fantastic hike with fabulous 360 degree views of San Luis Obispo and surrounding area. Cerro San Luis Obispo, known locally as Madonna Mountain is another great hike/mountain bike trail with equally spectacular views. Cerro San Luis and Bishop Peak are both part of a chain of peaks called the Nine Sisters that are ancient volcanic mountains.

Laguna Lake Golf Course is a nine-hole executive length golf course and is well known for its quality maintained course and outstanding putting greens.

Or if you prefer the cultural venue, The Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo offers a vast array of theater, concerts, dance, acrobatics and much more. It is also home to a Forbes Pipe Organ.

San Luis Obispo hosts the site of the very first motel in the world, originally known as the Milestone Mo-Tel, built back in 1925 charging $1.25 per room per night.

At the base of Madonna Mountain sits California’s landmark resort hotel, Madonna Inn, known for its uniquely exquisite rooms and magnificent restaurant. Tourists have been known to stop by just to take a peak at the famous waterfall urinal in the men’s restroom, which is frequently viewed by both men and women. Madonna Inn is highly sought after for banquets, weddings and receptions, as well as the special place for fine dining and lodging for that extra special occasion.

San Luis Obispo's Chinatown was a participant in the construction of the Pacific Coast Railway in the late 1800's. San Luis Obispo is the heart of the county with easy access to Cal Poly, downtown shopping and the San Luis Obispo Municipal Airport. San Luis Obispo is home to the famous Madonna Inn (a popular stop off Highway 101) and the largest farmers market in the county. Downtown San Luis Obispo is includes a busy shopping district.
